Dialer.exe crashes in Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008

Symptoms

When you run Dialer.exe on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, the Dialer.exe program crashes intermittently. Additionally, following event is logged in the Application log: Note This issue is temporarily resolved after you restart the computer.

Cause

This issue occurs because the internal data structures is not correctly removed after Dialer.exe fails to obtain device capabilities.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must be running Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Server 2008 SP2.
