SMB 2.0 client redirector freezes in Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2

Symptoms

Assume that you run an application on a Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Server 2008 SP2-based computer to access a network share. Additionally, assume that the application accesses the network share by using the Server Message Block 2.0 (SMB 2.0) client redirector. In this situation, the computer freezes.

Cause

This issue occurs because of an issue in the MID window on the SMB client that causes the redirector to freeze.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Workaround

To work around this issue, disable SMB 2.0 on the client computer. To do this, type following two commands in the command prompt, and then press ENTER:
sc config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/nsi
sc config mrxsmb20 start= disabled
