Symptoms

When you try to open a web in Microsoft Visual InterDev, you receive the following error message:
Unable to retrieve folder information from the server. An HTTP error occurred. The server could not complete your request. Contact your Internet service provider or Web server administrator to make sure that the server has the FrontPage Server Extensions installed, and that the Web application exists on that server.

Cause

Visual InterDev is setting the script access settings on the Web server to None. This occurs when the inheritance settings in the metabase are set to override child nodes. This includes the _vti_bin virtual directory. When the access settings on the root node are changed, the _vti_bin changes along with it.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Open the Internet Services Manager in the Microsoft Management Console.
  2. Right-click the root of the affected Web site.
  3. Click Properties.
  4. Select the Home Directory tab.
  5. Under the Application Settings section, change the setting to Script. You will not be prompted to override the settings.
  6. In the Web site, right-click the _vti_bin folder.
  7. Click Properties.
  8. Select the Virtual Directory tab.
  9. Change the access settings to Script, and then click Apply.
  10. Change the access settings to Script and Executable, and then click Apply.
You must follow these steps for each root Web where the inheritance was set to override the child nodes. In addition, you must repeat the steps as necessary for each subweb under the Web site.

NOTE: When you change metabase settings, always be careful when you select inheritance of settings.
