SQL Server 2012 with SP1 Slipstream ISO images do not install SP1

The information in this article applies to the following downloads that were previously posted on the MSDN and TechNet websites on November 8, 2012 and prior to being refreshed on November 27, 2012:
  • SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition with Service Pack 1 (x86 and x64) – DVD (all languages)
  • SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition with Service Pack 1 (x86 and x64) – DVD (all languages)
  • SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition with Service Pack 1 (x86 and x64) – DVD (all languages)
  • SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Core Edition with Service Pack 1 (x86 and x64) – DVD (all languages)
  • SQL Server 2012 Web Edition with Service Pack 1 (x86 and x64) – DVD (all languages)
  • SQL Server 2012 Business Intelligence Edition with Service Pack 1 (x86 and x64) – DVD (all languages)

Note This KB only describes an issue that was present in ISO media images on the MSDN and TechNet subscription download sites between November 8, 2012 and November 27, 2012. The ISO media has since been refreshed and enabled for download on MSDN. The new media does address the issue described in this KB but you may run into another unrelated issue that is documented in the following KB when using these new bits:

2792097 Error message when you try to install the SQL Server PowerPivot for SharePoint Setup Role in SQL Server 2012: "SharePoint Server 2010 is not installed on this computer"

Slipstream installation from ISO images does not work

SQL Server 2012 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) Slipstream ISO images (for example, SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition with Service Pack 1 (x86 and x64) – DVD (English)) were available for download on the MSDN and TechNet subscription sites on November 8, 2012. The Slipstream images enable you to install SQL Server 2012 with SP1 directly without the need to install SQL Server 2012 SP1 separately after you install SQL Server 2012. Unfortunately, by using the ISO images that were previously posted on MSDN and TechNet, SQL Server 2012 SP1 does not install successfully after you install the image. You remain at the Release to Manufacturing (RTM) version of SQL Server 2012.

Note All SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1 slipstream and ISO packages on the Microsoft Download Center are unaffected by this issue.

More Information

If you have already installed, or plan to install, the previously posted "SQL Server 2012 <Edition> with Service Pack 1 (x86 and x64) – DVD" ISO packages, use one of the following workarounds.

Workaround 1

Download and install the SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1 update after you have installed "SQL Server 2012 <Edition> with Service Pack 1 (x86 and x64) – DVD."

Workaround 2

Uninstall "SQL Server 2012 <Edition> with Service Pack 1 (x86 and x64) – DVD," and install the refreshed SQL Server 2012 SP1 ISO images that are currently available for download on MSDN.

Note The new refreshed images are for x86 or x64, no longer both.  This helps with download reliability and performance.
