OFF2000: Error Message: Unable to Run Save My Settings Wizard at This Time

Symptoms

When you run the Save My Settings Wizard, you may receive the following error message:
Unable to run Save My Settings Wizard at this time. You need to have a version of Office 2000 installed on this machine.'
Or, when you click Next after you type your e-mail address and password, the following options are unavailable (dimmed) in the dialog box that appears:
Save Profile
Retrieve Profile
The only option available is Delete Profile.

Cause

These symptoms can occur if the InstallRoot key is missing from the following registry path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common

Resolution

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Run, and type regedit in the Open box. Click OK.
  2. In the Registry Editor, locate and select the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common
  3. Look for a subkey called InstallRoot.
  4. If the InstallRoot subkey does not exist, continue with these steps. If the InstallRoot subkey does exist, STOP here.
  5. Select the Common key, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click Key.
  6. Select New Key #1, type InstallRoot and then press ENTER.
  7. Select InstallRoot, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click String Value.
  8. Select New Value #1, type Path and then press ENTER.
  9. Double-click the Path string value.
  10. In the Value Data box, type the path to your Office folder.

    NOTE: By default, this path is
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office
    You can verify this path by locating Excel.exe or Winword.exe on your hard disk.
  11. Click OK after you type the full path.
  12. Quit the Registry Editor.
  13. Run the Save My Settings Wizard again.
