XL2002: Inconsistent Error Flags for Formulas in Worksheet Cells

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

In Microsoft Excel, when a formula in a cell is modified, you may receive a warning flag with the following message:
The formula in this cell differs from the formulas in this area of the spreadsheet.
However, when a changed cell causes another cell to have a formula that is inconsistent with the cells in its immediate area, that cell may not be flagged as expected.

Cause

This behavior can occur when you change several cells in a range of cells that contain similar formulas, and the changes to those cells cause another cell to have an inconsistent formula.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

More information

The warning flags are not the same as error messages. The flags do not necessarily indicate an error, and as long as the formula is valid, the formula continues to return valid data.
