Microsoft Map removed from the computer when you upgrade to Excel 2002 or to Excel 2003

Symptoms

When you attempt to create a map in Microsoft Excel 2002 or in Microsoft Office Excel 2003, for example, from a list of countries, no map appears as expected, nor does the Microsoft Map icon appear on the standard toolbar. This behavior is different from earlier versions of Excel.

Cause

This behavior occurs because Excel 2002 and Excel 2003 do not support Microsoft Map. If you had Microsoft Map installed as part of an earlier version of Excel, the program is removed from the computer along with the earlier version of Excel when you upgrade to Excel 2002 or to Excel 2003.

Note If the Microsoft Map icon appeared on a toolbar in an earlier version of Excel, the icon may still appear on the same toolbar after you upgrade to Excel 2002 or to Excel 2003. However, the icon performs no function and should be removed.

More information

If the Microsoft Map button appears on your toolbar in Excel 2002, you should delete it. If you attempt to use this button, Excel may not function as expected. Follow these steps to delete the Microsoft Map button:
  1. Start Excel 2002.
  2. Click the Toolbar Options button (the downward-pointing arrow at the right of the toolbar).
  3. On the Toolbar Options menu, click Add or Remove Buttons.
  4. Click Standard, and then select Map in the resulting list.
