XL2002: Spelling Checker Does Not Correct to the Suggested Spelling

Symptoms

In Microsoft Excel, if you use the spelling checker (click Spelling on the Tools menu) and the spelling checker finds a spelling error, when you select a suggested correction, and you then click Change, you may receive the following message:
Formula is too long.
When you click OK on the message, you receive the following message
The spelling check is complete for the entire sheet.
but the suggested correction does not occur as expected.

Cause

This behavior can occur when you have more that 911 characters in the formula bar and you are attempting to check the spelling of the words in the worksheet.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, check the spelling of very long text strings in the formula bar. To check the spelling of very long text strings, follow these steps:
  1. Select the cell with the long text string.
  2. Place the insertion point into the text string on the formula bar.
  3. On the Tools menu, click Spelling.
