Access Denied error message when a user tries to access a redirected folder share or a home drive share on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You configure the folder redirection feature by using Group Policy. Or, you map a home drive in a user account's properties in an Active Directory environment.
  • The share of the redirected folder targets the home drive or folder redirection targets of other users. Or, the user's home drive contains the home drive or folder redirection targets of other users.

For example, you configure two users (user A and user B) in Active Directory to have a home drive on the following server locations:
    • \\server\share\UserA
    • \\server\share\UserB
Note If the home drive is mapped to a DFS Namespace, you must install update 2715922. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
2715922 Home folder is not mapped to a client computer when multiple users are logged on to a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Automatic offline mode is enabled.

Note By default, all redirected folders are set to automatic offline mode if the network latency is longer than 80 milliseconds (ms).
  • User A logs on to the computer. All the user's data is available offline.
  • User A sets the redirected folders or the home drive to offline (manual offline mode).
  • User A logs off the computer.
  • User B logs on to the computer for the first time. User B has no data that is available offline.
In this scenario, folder redirection and direct access to the UNC path of the data fail with an access denied error message. Additionally, applications that rely on the offline path to load binaries fail.

After you install this hotfix, the data that is marked as offline by user A is put online automatically when user B logs on to the computer.
