How to disable the Java web plug-in in Internet Explorer

View products that this article applies to.

INTRODUCTION

Java is a unique form of extensibility because it can be invoked in the following two ways:
  • By using an
    applet element
  • By using an
object element that has a CLSID of a Java virtual machine (JVM)
These two invocation methods are subject to different security controls. This Knowledge Base Article contains an easy fix solution  to disable the Java web plug-in from being loaded through these controls. The easy fix solution will also disable the Java Network Launching Protocol (JNLP) handler.

More Information

Customers can disable the Java web plug-in in Internet Explorer by installing the appropriate easy fix solution in this article. The easy fix solution uses the Application Compatibility Shim infrastructure. Every time that Internet Explorer is loaded, a library will be injected that will block all the instances that try to load the Java web plug-in.

The easy fix solution also contains a procedure that disables the JNLP handler by changing the Windows registry.

Important

This easy fix solution performs procedures that will change the system’s configuration and the registry. Although no issues are expected while you are installing the easy fix solution, we suggest that you to create a restore point and perform a backup of the registry before you run the solution.
