Outlook password expiration notification in Office 365 pre-upgrade

Office 365 pre-upgrade users who use Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 and Microsoft Outlook 2010 don't receive notification when their password is about to expire or when their password has expired. Additionally, Outlook enters a disconnected state when a user�s password expires and doesn't let the user know what the issue is or what action is required to resolve the issue.

This issue is fixed in the Outlook 2007 hotfix package and the Outlook 2010 hotfix package that are dated August 28, 2012. For more info about these updates, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:

After the update is installed, Office 365 pre-upgrade users who use Outlook receive a pop-up message in the notification area on the right side of the taskbar if their password is about to expire in a certain time period. The time period is set by administrators.



For Office 365 pre-upgrade users whose passwords have already expired, Outlook displays the following message to notify the user:



In either scenario, Outlook provides a URL for Office 365 pre-upgrade users to update their passwords through their web browser. When a user clicks the link, he or she is redirected to the Office 365 portal to update his or her password.

Change the password notification time period

By default, the password notification time period is 14 days in Office 365 pre-upgrade. Administrators can change the time period. To do this, follow these steps:

1. If the Windows Azure Active Directory Module for Windows PowerShell isn't already installed, install it. It's available from the following Microsoft website:
   Manage Windows Azure Active Directory by using Windows PowerShell
2. Start the Windows Azure Active Directory Module for Windows PowerShell, and then connect to Windows Azure Active Directory. To do this, run the following cmdlet:

   Connect-MSOLService

   Then, when you're prompted, enter your administrator credentials.
3. Use the Set-MSOLPasswordPolicy cmdlet to specify the password notification time period.
   
   The following is an example of how to run this cmdlet:

   Set-MSOLPasswordPolicy �DomainName contoso.com �NotificationDays 10

   Note Be aware that the password expiration notification is only shown one time every 24 hours for the current profile.
