View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

When you install any Exchange Server 2003 (or earlier) components on the same computer as Microsoft Outlook, various problems can occur with Outlook or with other applications that use MAPI. This includes, but is not limited to the following symptoms:
  • No results are returned by a search in Outlook.
  • Error indicating there is no default e-mail client installed.
  • Crashes in Outlook.
  • Settings on the Voice Mail tab are disabled.
  • Third-party MAPI applications do not work.

Therefore, this configuration is not supported nor recommended.

Resolution

If you have Outlook installed on the same computer as Microsoft Exchange Server, you will want touse Outlook on a different computer.

If you have a workstation that is primarily used for Outlook but that also has Exchange management tools installed (for example, Exchange System Manager), you should perform the following steps to remove the Exchange management tools (assuming you want to keep Outlook installed on the computer):
  1. Uninstall the Exchange management components using Control Panel.
  2. Run the FixMapi.exe tool.
    • Windows 7 and Windows Vista
      1. Click Start.
      2. Type fixmapi in the Search programs and files box.
      3. In the results, click Fixmapi.exe.

Note, there is no user-interface for the Fixmapi tool and there is no message indicating a result.
      4. Restart your computer.
    • Windows XP
      1. On the Start menu click Run.
      2. In the Open box, type the following command and then click OK.

        %windir%\system32\fixmapi.exe

Note, there is no user-interface for the Fixmapi tool and there is no message indicating a result
      3. Restart your computer.
