Network adapter teaming breaks after you install the hotfix that is described in KB article 2487376 or 2495300 in Windows Vista SP2 or in Windows Server 2008 SP2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Server 2008 SP2.
  • You configure network adapter teaming on the computer.
  • You install the hotfix that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article 2487376 or 2495300.
In this scenario, network adapter teaming breaks. Additionally, the network adapter teaming settings and other TCP/IP related static settings are lost.

Cause

This issue occurs because the hotfix changes the serial numbers of the network adapter PCI devices.

Resolution

Note If you upgrade Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2008 R2, or if you upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7, and then you install the hotfix that is described in this KB article, network adapter teaming still breaks.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

After apply this hotfix, you must create a registry key before you restart the computer. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Startstart button , type regedit in the Search programs and files box, and then press ENTER.
    UAC If you are prompted for an administrator password, type the password. If you are prompted for confirmation, provide confirmation.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\PnP\Pci
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type HackFlags, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click HackFlags, and then click Modify.
  6. In the Value data box, type 0x00040000, and then click OK.
  7. Exit Registry Editor.

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

This hotfix does not replace a previously released hotfix.
