IPsec session takes 5 to 6 minutes to connect to a storage controller on a computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You connect a computer to the iSCSI ports of a storage array, and the computer is running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • An IPsec session starts several Internet Protocol security (IPsec) connections between the computer and the storage array.
  • An error occurs on one of the iSCSI ports on the storage controller.
In this scenario, it takes 5 to 6 minutes for the IPsec session to start new IPsec connections between the computer and an alternative port on the storage controller. Therefore, the high availability feature for the storage array does not work as expected.

Note Specifically, this issue occurs when you run TCP socket-based applications that use IPsec security and then implement your own failover process.

Cause

This issue occurs because the previous IPsec security association is still active when the storage array tries to reconnect to the server.

Hotfix information

Important This hotfix has been re-released to address an issue in which the digital signature on files produced and signed by Microsoft will expire prematurely, as described in Microsoft Security Advisory 2749655.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

  • This update also applies to other IPSec secured network traffic.
  • The NlbsIdleTime value controls the time interval before a Security Association (SA) is removed. By default, the value is set to 25 seconds.
  • To set the idle time interval, enter a number of seconds in the NlbsIdleTime registry entry.
  • You must restart the computer to apply the changes.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes
Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows Vista" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
  • The files that apply to a specific product, SR_Level (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table.
