Internet zone
The level of security set for the Internet zone is applied to all websites by default. The security level for this zone is set to Medium High, but you can change it to either Medium or High. The only websites for which this security setting is not used are those in the Local intranet zone or sites that you specifically entered into the Trusted or Restricted site zones.
Local intranet zone
This zone is for all websites and content that is stored on a corporate or business network. The default security level for the Local intranet zone is set to Medium, but you can change it to any level.
To manually add a site to the Local intranet sites zone, follow these steps:
- Click Start, type Internet Explorer in the search box, and then click Internet Explorer in the Programs list.
- In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
- Click the Security tab, click Local intranet, and then click Sites.
- Click Advanced.
- Type the name of the website that you want to add to the Local intranet zone, and then click Add.
- Click Close, and then click OK.
Trusted sites zone
The Trusted sites zone can include all Internet sites that you have specifically indicated to be ones that you trust not to damage your computer or information. For example, you can add websites that are on your organization's intranet, or websites for established companies that you trust. The security level for Trusted sites is set to Medium, but you can change it to any level.
To manually add a site to the Trusted sites zone, follow these steps:
- Click Start, type Internet Explorer in the search box, and then click Internet Explorer in the Programs list.
- In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
- Click the Security tab, click Restricted sites, and then click Sites.
- Type the name of the website that you want to add to the Trusted sites zone, and then click Add.
- Click Close, and then click OK.
Restricted sites zone
The level of security set for Restricted sites zone is applied to sites that might potentially damage your computer or your information. You can still access a website that you add to this zone, but you will not receive any automatic updates or downloads from the website. Also, Internet Explorer will not run scripts or send cookies from sites that you add to the Restricted sites zone. This also helps reduce unwanted pop-up windows that some sites may try to install. The security level for Restricted sites is set to High and can't be changed.
To add a website to the Restricted sites zone, follow these steps:
- Click Start, type Internet Explorer in the search box, and then click Internet Explorer in the Programs list.
- In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
- Click the Security tab, click Restricted sites, and then click Sites.
- Type the name of the website that you want to add to the Restricted sites zone, and then click Add.
