Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You configure Microsoft Exchange Online Archiving on your on-premises Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 organization that has Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1 or a later-version update rollup installed.
  • You create a retention policy, and then apply the policy to a user’s primary mailbox in the on-premises Exchange organization.
  • You enforce the retention policy to be processed on the on-premises primary mailbox by running the Start-ManagedFolderAssistant cmdlet.
  • You try to enforce the retention policy to be processed on the cloud-based archive mailbox by running the Start-ManagedFolderAssistant cmdlet in a remote Windows PowerShell session.
In this scenario, the cmdlet fails. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
WARNING: An unexpected error has occurred and a Watson dump is being generated: Value cannot be null.

Cause

This issue occurs because messaging records management (MRM) cannot detect the folder associated information (FAI) message objects in the primary mailbox. Therefore, MRM stops processing the mailbox.
