You cannot access an RDX removable disk that you formatted by using NTFS in Windows Server 2003, in Windows Vista, in Windows Server 2008, in Windows 7, or in Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Assume that you format an RDX removable disk that has no partitions (for example, the disk is blank) by using the NTFS file system. Then, you copy data to the disk and disconnect the disk from the computer. In this situation, the data on the disk is not readable when you reconnect the disk to the computer or to a different computer.

Note this issue has been observed with the RDX removable disk in either of the following condition:
  • Format on Windows Server 2003 500GB or larger, and read on Windows Server 2003
  • Format on Windows Server 2003700GB or larger, and read on Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Format on Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 1.5TB or larger, and read on Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

Cause

This issue occurs because Windows handles the boot sector on the disk incorrectly when you format the disk as a super floppy disk.
