Summary

Starting with Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista, USB overcurrent pop-up notifications no longer appear. This is by design. Previously, in Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP, these notifications would appear when USB overcurrent conditions occurred.

More Information

Starting with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, Windows will attempt to automatically recover from a USB overcurrent condition. As a result, overcurrent notifications were not needed and only served to potentially confuse the user. However, in some cases the overcurrent may not be recoverable and the USB device will be unresponsive until you restart the computer.

An overcurrent condition occurs on an electrical circuit when devices that are connected to a computer draw too much power from the USB port. An overcurrent condition may occur when the USB wiring is crossed up (short-circuited). This condition may also occur when too many devices are connected to the same hub, which overloads the hub.
