"0x8007007A" error message when you shrink a volume on a logical disk in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:  
  • You have a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
  • You have a third-party application that uses the IVdsVolumeShrink interface to shrink volumes.
  • You try to use the application to shrink a volume on a logical disk. The name of the volume is longer than 50 characters.
In this scenario, the shrink operation fails and you receive the following error message:
0x8007007A (E_ERROR_INSUFFICIENT_BUFFER)

Cause

This issue occurs because the Shrink.dll component limits the maximum length of volume names to 50 characters.

Resolution

After you install this hotfix, the maximum length of volume names is increased to 260 characters.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
