Symptoms

You cannot use the Links dialog box to change the Update setting to Manual for an Excel workbook.

Cause

The Manual option in the Links dialog box only changes the Update setting for the following objects linked into the workbook:
  • Embedded objects (such as a Microsoft Word document that is linked into a workbook)
  • OLE objects
  • Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) objects

More information

You cannot use the Links dialog box to make links to other Microsoft Excel workbooks be updated manually. Linked Excel workbooks are always updated automatically when Excel calculates the workbook.

To see the Links dialog box, click Links on the Edit menu.
