Frequent requests to enter the smart card PIN after you install KB 2288953 and enable smart card PIN caching in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You use Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
  • You enable smart card PIN caching on the computer.
  • You install the following update on the computer:
    2288953 MS10-064: Description of the security update for Office Outlook 2007: September 14, 2010
In this scenario, you are prompted to enter the smart card PIN every time that you try to send a signed email message or read an encrypted email message.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing.   • Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\GSC\Policies\PIN\Authentication
    Key: Allow
    Type: REG_DWORD
    Value: 0x00000001
    Note This registry entry setting enables smart card PIN caching.
  • Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\GSC\Policies\PIN\Authentication
    Key: Minutes
    Type: REG_DWORD
    Value: 0x00000005
    Note This registry entry setting configures the PIN caching feature to cache a smart card PIN for five minutes.
