Error during an administrator self-service password reset in Office 365: "Contact an administrator to reset your password"

Symptoms

When you try to reset your administrator password by using the self-service password reset for administrators feature in Microsoft Office 365, you receive the following error message:

Contact an administrator to reset your password.

Additionally, one of the following messages is displayed together with the first error message:

  • Your company's administrator can reset your password and provide you with a new temporary password.
  • If you are an administrator and have forgotten your password, ask another administrator in your company to reset your password.
  • If you are the only administrator in your company, contact support. You may be eligible to reset your own password in the future.

Cause

This issue may occur if one of the following conditions is true:

  • The user name is not found.
  • The user is not authorized. (That is, the user is not an administrator.)�
  • The self-service password reset for administrators feature is disabled.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Verify that the user name is correct.
  2. Verify that the user account is an administrator account.
  3. Verify that the self-service password reset for administrators feature is enabled. To do this, run the following Microsoft Online Services PowerShell command:

    Get-MsolCompanyInformation | fl SelfServePasswordResetEnabled

    For example,

    PS C:\windows\system32> Get-MsolCompanyInformation | fl SelfServePasswordResetEnabled
    SelfServePasswordResetEnabled : True
    • If SelfServePasswordResetEnabledis True, the feature is enabled
    • If SelfServePasswordResetEnabled is False, the feature is disabled
