OFF2000: "About <Program Name>" on Help Menu Does Not Show SR-1 Is Installed

If you click About program name on the Help menu in any of the Office programs, the version number may not show SR-1, even though you successfully installed the SR-1 update.

NOTE: program name is the name of the Office program that you are using.

The About program name dialog box may not show SR-1 on the version line, if all of the following are true:

• You installed Office 2000 SR-1, or you updated an Office 2000 installation by using the SR-1 update.
• You installed a program that uses the Windows Installer but is not part of the Office program that you have installed. For example, you have Office 2000 Standard installed and updated to SR-1, but then you install Microsoft PhotoDraw version 2.0 (or a non SR-1 standalone version of Microsoft Access 2000).
• You rename or delete the Mso9.dll file.
• The first program that you start after you rename or delete the Mso9.dll file is a non SR-1 program.

Depending on which programs you have installed in addition to Office 2000 SR-1, do one of the following to resolve this problem.

Standalone Office Program That Is Not Updated to SR-1

If you have Office 2000 installed and updated to SR-1 (for example, Office 2000 Standard), and then you install a standalone Office 2000 program that is not included in your Office program (for example, Access 2000), do the following to update any programs that are not at the SR-1 level:

• Run the Office 2000 SR-1 Update again from the location that you originally used to update Office.

Non-Office 2000 Program That Uses Mso9.dll Installed

If you have Office 2000 installed and updated to SR-1 (for example, Office 2000 Standard), and then you install a non-Office 2000 program (for example, PhotoDraw 2000 version 2) that also installs the Mso9.dll file, follow these steps to repair your Office installation. This re-installs the SR-1 version of Mso9.dll, as well as any other files that may not be at the SR-1 level.

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Double-click the Office 2000 entry in the list of installed programs.
4. In the Microsoft Office 2000 Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Repair Office.
5. In the Reinstall/Repair Microsoft Office 2000 dialog box, click Reinstall Office, and then click Finish.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Any program that uses the Windows Installer and that installs the Mso9.dll file can potentially exhibit this problem, if different versions of the Mso9.dll file are installed by each program. If you start a Windows Installer program and a critical file is missing, the Windows Installer automatically repairs the program by using the source files for that program. The Windows Installer cannot determine that another program (that also uses the critical file) is installed, and that the source files for that program have a later version of the file.
