"To use your subscription for Microsoft Office on this computer, you must first disable the subscription on another computer" message when you install Office Professional Plus

Symptoms

Assume that your company has signed up for Microsoft Office 365, and then you try to install Microsoft Office Professional Plus on a computer. However, you are prompted with the following dialog box:

To use your subscription for Microsoft Office on this computer, you must first disable the subscription on another computer. To disable the subscription installed on the other computer, select the computer in the list, and then click Remove.

Cause

This issue occurs if the maximum number of computers has already been licensed to the user ID that you entered. The maximum number of computers depends on the kind of subscription that your company signed up for.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, remove the license from another computer. Specifically,�in the list of computers,�click the computer name whose license you want to remove,�and then click�Remove.

If your company has used the maximum number of licenses, and you want to remove a license, you can also use the�osaui.exe /r command. When you run this command, you manually open the dialog box that is displayed in the "Symptoms" section.

To run the osaui.exe /r command, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
  2. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    C :\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE14\osaui.exe /r
  3. When you are prompted, enter your credentials.
  4. A dialog box that resembles the one in the "Symptoms" section is displayed. The dialog box lists the computers that are associated with the user ID that you entered. Remove a license by removing a computer on the list. To do this, click the computer that you want to remove, and then click�Remove.
