Symptoms

When you try to play a .wmv file that was uploaded to a Microsoft SharePoint Online site by using the Silverlight plug-in in your web browser, you receive the following error message:

Media failed to load

However, you do not experience these symptoms when you play the .wmv file in Windows Media Player. Windows Media Player streams the content in the file to your desktop.�

Cause

This behavior is by design. The Silverlight plug-in does not support the Windows Media Video 9 Screen codec.

Resolution

To resolve this situation, use a supported Silverlight codec, or play the file in Windows Media Player.
