You cannot restore large files in the NTFS file system when all the data streams that have sparse attributes are deleted in Windows Server 2008 or in Windows Vista

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You restore large data files in an NTFS file system on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista.
  • All the sparse data streams of the files are removed.
  • The sparse attribute of the files are not removed.
  • The left sparse attribute information is large enough to exceed the restoring limitation of the NTFS file system.
In this scenario, the restore operation fails, and the data in the data files is lost. Additionally, the following events are logged in the System log:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Ntfs
Event Category: None
Event ID: 50
Computer: <Computer name>
Description: {Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the data for the file. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

Additionally, the following event is logged in the Application log:

Event ID: 26
Category: None
Source: Application Popup
Type: Information
Machine : <Computer name>
Message: Application popup: Windows - Delayed Write Failed : Windows was unable to save all the data for the file <file name> The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

Cause

This issue occurs because the sparse attribute of a file remains on an NTFS file system after you delete all data streams that have a sparse attribute from the file.

NTFS supports additional named data streams. When an additional named data stream that has a sparse attribute is added to a file, the sparse attribute is also set for the file. However, the sparse attribute for the file remains if you remove all the data streams that have a sparse attribute from the file. Therefore, the restored file is displayed as a sparse file when you perform a backup and restore operation on the file. This issue occurs even if the file does not have data streams that have sparse attributes.

When you restore the sparse file, NTFS handles the file as a fragmented file. If the sparse file size is too large, the system resources are insufficient to complete the restore operation. This issue occurs because the sparse attribute of a file remains on the NTFS file system after you delete all data streams that have a sparse attribute from the file.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes
Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows Vista" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
  • The files that apply to a specific product, SR_Level (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table.
    VersionProductSR_LevelService branch
    6.0.600 1 . 22xxxWindows Vista and Windows Server 2008SP1LDR
    6.0.600 2 . 22xxxWindows Vista and Windows Server 2008SP2LDR
  • Service Pack 1 is integrated into the release version of Windows Server 2008. Therefore, RTM milestone files apply only to Windows Vista. RTM milestone files have a 6.0.0000.xxxxxx version number.
  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 and for Windows Vista" section. MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
