"0x00000004E" Stop error occurs when some users try to access shared files in Windows Server 2008 or in Windows Vista

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You share some files on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista.
  • Some users try to access these shared files.
In this scenario, the computer may restart unexpectedly. Additionally, you receive a Stop error that resembles the following:
STOP 0x0000004E (0x0000009A,parameter2, parameter3, parameter4 )PFN_LIST_CORRUPT
Notes
  • The first parameter, 0x0000009A, indicates that a driver tried to free a page that is still locked for I/O.
  • The parameters in the Stop error message vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.
  • Not all "0x0000004E" Stop errors are caused by this problem.

Cause

A thread of the Redirected Driver Buffering SubSystem (Rdbss.sys) driver is completing�an I/O request packet (IRP). However, some pages used by the IRP are still locked. Therefore, you receive the Stop error message.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
