Summary

Prior to the MDAC 2.5 release, users were able to use a number of methods to install the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC). In addition, it was possible to install the MDAC components with Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 (or any of its released service packs.)

This article discusses how MDAC Components are integrated with the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system and how to install upgraded versions of these components on the Windows 2000 platform.

More information

With the release of MDAC 2.5, the Microsoft Data Access Components are integrated into Windows 2000 as system-level components. This means that beginning with Windows 2000, MDAC is part of the base operating system installation.

Prior to MDAC 2.6, users could only install upgraded MDAC components on their Windows 2000 platform in one of the following ways:

Install a released service pack. -or-

Run an operating system Web-based update package.Please note the following:

When you are applying an operating system update package or service pack, you should consider doing a reboot of your Windows 2000 operating system.Old MDAC installation and distribution methods still apply to Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 9x operating systems.
