Duplicate contacts appear in the search results when you search for users in Lync 2010

Problem

After you install Microsoft Lync 2010, duplicate contacts are displayed in the search results when you type a name, an email address, or an alias in Lync 2010. This behavior may also interfere with any custom rules that require information in the default Contacts folder in Microsoft Outlook.

Additionally, because Lync 2010 also synchronizes your frequent contacts with the default Contacts folder in Outlook, you may see duplicate contacts when you view the address book in Outlook.

Solution

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Start Lync 2010.
  2. In the upper-right corner, click the icon that resembles a gear.
  3. In the Lync - Options dialog box, click Personal.
  4. Click to clear the Save my Lync contacts in my personal contacts folder on the Exchange Server check box, and then click OK.
Note You must also manually delete any duplicate contacts from Outlook. However, these duplicate contacts won't be re-added to the default Contacts folder in Outlook.
