OFF2000: "Cannot load fp4Autl.dll" Error Starting FrontPage

Symptoms

When you try to start FrontPage, the following error message may appear:
Cannot load "fp4Autl.dll"
When you click OK, FrontPage does not start.

Cause

The above error may occur if you did all of the following:
  • You created a transform (.mst) with the Custom Installation Wizard (CIW).
  • In the CIW, you set the FrontPage feature in the Set Feature Installation States dialog box to Not Available.
  • You installed Office using this transform.
  • You then added FrontPage to your Office installation through Maintenance Mode Setup.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

To temporarily work around this problem, please do the following:
  1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Double-click the Office 2000 item in the list of installed programs.
  3. Click Add or Remove Features in the Microsoft Office 2000 Maintenance Mode dialog box.
  4. Click the list for FrontPage and change the installation state to Run all from My Computer.
  5. Click Update Now.
  6. Start FrontPage.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.
