OFF2000: CD-ROM Error When Running Office Program

Symptoms

When you run an Office program, you may receive the following error:
Error Reading CD-ROM in Drive <drive>:

Please Insert CD-ROM <CD name>
With Serial Number <serial number> in Drive <drive>:

If the CD-ROM is still in the drive, it may require cleaning.

Press ENTER for OK or ESC to Cancel: OK
where <drive> is the your CD drive letter, <CD name> is the name of the CD-ROM, and <serial number> is the serial number of the CD.

If you press ENTER, the error continues. If you press ESC, you receive the following error:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click Details, you see:
<program> caused an invalid page fault in module <program>.exe at <address>.
where:<program> is the Office program you are running and <address> is a memory address.

Cause

You are running an Office program that is installed to run from CD and you remove the CD.

Resolution

To resolve this behavior, do not remove the Office CD while you are using an Office program that has been installed to run from the CD.
