You receive a "Waiting for another application to complete an OLE action" error message when you edit a linked PowerPoint 2000 presentation

Symptoms

After you edit a PowerPoint 2000 presentation that is linked to an Excel worksheet or Word document, the following error message may appear when you quit PowerPoint and return to Excel 2000 or Word 2000:
Microsoft [Excel | Word] is waiting for another application to complete an OLE action.

Cause

This error occurs when Excel or Word requests the updated slide image from PowerPoint. If PowerPoint was closed and it is still partially in memory, the error message appears. This condition may also occur when system resources are low.

Workaround

To prevent this error from occurring, it is recommended that you close the presentation but do not quit PowerPoint. With PowerPoint still open, the error is less likely to occur.
