VSS backup fails on a passive node of an Exchange Server 2007 CCR cluster and Event ID 2034 is logged

Symptoms

In a Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Cluster Continuous Replication (CCR) cluster environment, you run a Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) backup on a passive node. In this situation, the backup fail. Additionally, the following event is logged in the Application log:

Description:
The Microsoft Exchange Replication Service VSS writer (instance <GUID>) failed with error code FFFFFFFC when processing the backup completion event.


When this issue occurs, the third-party backup application may report an error message that resembles the following:

0xe000037b - Using the job settings, xxxx attempted to back up the passive copy of the Exchange database. However, the passive copy was not available after the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) snapshot was performed. Try to run the job again.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Exchange Server2007 server incorrectly returns False when it calls the SetWriterFailure method of the CVssWriter class that has VSS_E_WRITERERROR_RETRYABLE specified.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the following update rollup:
