Symptoms

You have a computer that is running a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based primary domain controller (PDC), a Microsoft Windows 2000 PDC emulator, or the Windows Server 2003 Active Directory directory service. On this computer, the following event may appear in the Event Viewer:

Event ID: 2510
Source: Server
Type: Error
Description: The server service was unable to map error code 1909.

Cause

This issue occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • Account lockout policies are in effect.
  • A user tries to change his or her domain password by using the local Windows 95-based or Windows 98-based computer when the user logs on to a computer that is running Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003. However, the user typed an incorrect password in the Old password text box on the Change Password screen. Therefore, the operation is unsuccessful.
  • The user locks the account by typing an incorrect password in the Old password text box, and then clicks OK more times than the number of allocated "bad logon attempts" in the Windows NT domain's account policy.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, enter the correct password in the Old password text box when you try to change passwords in Windows 95, in Windows 98, in Windows 2000, or in Windows Server 2003.
