Symptoms

When you attempt to start a program, you may receive any of the following error messages:
  • A device attached to the system is not functioning.
    The filename file is linked to missing export MFC42.DLL:6453
    WordPad.exe file is linked to a missing export MFC42.DLL: 6353

Cause

This behavior can occur if the Mfc42.dll file is damaged or is the incorrect version.

The Windows 98 Mfc42.dll file is 954,128 bytes in size with a version of 4.21.7325.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, extract a new copy of the Mfc42.dll file from your original Windows 98 CD-ROM into the Windows\System folder using the System File Checker tool.

To start the System File Checker tool, click Start, click Run, type sfc.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.

  • The trial version of PC-Cillin v2.0. PC-Cillin replaces the Windows 98 version of the Mfc42.dll file.
  • The bonus software that is included with several Hewlett-Packard DeskJet printer models.
  • FaxSys version 4.10.
