You cannot bind clients to a NIS server or cannot mount NFS shares in Windows Server 2008 and in Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

You may experience one or more of the following issues on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2:
  • You cannot mount some Network File System (NFS) shares that are exported from a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 and that runs Services for NFS. Additionally, you cannot mount the shares even if the showmount command lists these shares.
  • When you try to bind some Network Information Service (NIS) clients to a NIS server that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 by using a host list, the bind fails.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Portmapper driver version 4.0 in Windows Server 2008 and in Windows Server 2008 R2 returns 0.0.0.0 as an IP address to the GetAddr request.
