View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

When you try to request a certificate on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, certificate enrollment may fail. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
The filename or extension is too long. (0x800700CE)
This problem occurs when the Subject Name field of the certificate is longer than MAX_PATH (260 characters).

Cause

This problem occurs because the Subject Name field length of the certificate is restricted to 260 bytes. Therefore, certificate enrollment fails if the length exceeds 260 bytes.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install this hotfix. After you install this hotfix, the Subject Name field length limit is extended to 64 kilobytes (KB).
