Some noncritical volumes are included in the system state backup image when you use the "-allCritical" switch in Windows Server 2008 R2 or in Windows 7

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You create more than 9 volumes on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7.
  • On the computer, you perform a system state backup operation by using the -allCritical switch.
In this scenario, some noncritical volumes are incorrectly included in the backup image. Additionally, the backup operation may fail if the target volume of the backup operation is incorrectly handled as if the volume is a critical volume.

Cause

Thisissue occurs because the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) Automated System Recovery (ASR) writer performs a prefix comparison operation whenthe ASR writer enumeratesthe volumes. This behavior causes the ASRwriter to incorrectly mark these noncritical volumes as critical volumes.
