Symptoms

The ZwAllocateVirtualMemory function fails together with the STATUS_INSUFFICIENT_RESOURCES error randomly on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

Note If you monitor the available memory by using Performance Monitor when the function fails, the Performance Monitor data indicates there is sufficient memory available.

This issue occurs because of a race condition in the memory management.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
