Symptoms

When you click the Refresh button to update a Microsoft Visio 2010 web drawing (.vdw), the Visio web drawing does not update in the browser window. This issue occurs even though the underlying data source that the drawing is linked to has changed.

Cause

This issue occurs when one of the following conditions is true:
  • The underlying data source on which the Visio web drawing is based has not changed.
  • The Minimum Cache Age setting in Visio Graphics Service is set to a value that is larger than 0.

More Information

The Minimum Cache Age setting in Visio Graphics Service determines the minimum interval between redraws of a Visio web drawing when a user makes a Refresh request. Until this interval expires, Visio Graphics Service does not poll the data source for fresh data. Instead, the service always responds to Refresh requests for a Visio web drawing by using the last instance of that file that was generated after the last Refresh request.

When Minimum Cache Age is set to a small value, users can update the Visio web drawing more frequently. This can over-stress the server. When the Minimum Cache Age is set a large value, the Visio web drawings update less frequently, and the stress on the server is reduced.

The Visio Graphics Service administrator can configure the Minimum Cache Age setting to use values between 0 to 34,560 minutes. The default is five minutes. For more information about how to configure the Visio Graphics Service settings, visit the following TechNet webpage:
