"Remove Background" and "Artistic Effects" commands are unavailable when you edit a picture in Excel 2010, in PowerPoint 2010, or in Word 2010

Symptoms

When you edit a picture in Microsoft Excel 2010, in Microsoft PowerPoint 2010, or in Microsoft Word 2010, the�Remove Background�and Artistic Effects�commands are unavailable under�Picture Tools on the Format tab.

Note To view the Format tab, you must have a picture selected.

Cause

This issue occurs for one of the following reasons:
  • The picture is in a vector format.
  • The Windows Imaging Component (WIC) is not installed.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:
  • If the picture is in a vector format, such as .emf, .wmf, or .svg, follow these steps:
    1. Right-click the picture, and then click�Cut.
    2. On the Home tab in the Clipboard group, click the down-arrow on the Paste button, and then click�Paste Special.
    3. Select any of the picture formats, such as .png, ,gif, or .jpeg, and then click�OK�to reinsert the picture in a raster format.
  • If the picture is in a raster format, such as .jpg, .jpeg, .bmp, .gif, .tiff, or .png, install the Windows Imaging Component (WIC).

    To install the Windows Imaging Component, visit one of the following Microsoft Download websites:

    Windows Imaging Component (64-bit)
