The "LsaLogonUser" function fails in Windows Server 2003 SP2 if a driver installs a hook to LSA

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install a driver that installs a hook to the Local Security Authority (LSA) component on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2).
  • An application calls the LsaLogonUser function to create a user token.
In this scenario, the user token is not created successfully. Additionally, an event that resembles the following may be logged in the Security log:
Event Type: Failure Audit
Event Source: Security
Event Category: Logon/Logoff
Event ID: 537
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: <computer name>
Description:
Logon Failure:
Reason: An error occurred during logon
Authentication Package: Negotiate
Status code: 0xC0000078

Cause

This issue occurs because some data that is required by the LsaLogonUser function is overwritten by the installed hook. Therefore, the LsaLogonUser function cannot create a user token.
