You cannot open a table in an Access 2007 database after the table is changed in Access 2010

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You open a Microsoft Office Access 2007 database in Microsoft Access 2010.
  • You add a column to a table in the database.
In this scenario, when an Access 2007 user opens the database, the user cannot open the table that you changed in Access 2010. This occurs even when you remove the new column from the table.

Cause

This issue occurs because Access 2010 marks the table as an Access 2010 element. The table cannot be downgraded to Access 2007 after this occurs.

Workaround

To work around this issue, you must remove the new element from the table, open an Access 2007 database in Access 2010, and then import the table into the new database. The table is then marked as an Access 2007 element.
