The preview of a workbook in Excel 2010 does not contain the formatting or other features that were added by using the BeforePrint event

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You use an add-in that runs when you click Print or Print Preview in Microsoft Excel 2010.
  • The add-in uses the BeforePrint event to add specific formatting to workbooks or to add another feature, such as a cover page.
  • You print or preview the workbook in Backstage view. To preview the workbook in Backstage view, click the File tab, and then click Print.
In this scenario, the preview of the workbook does not contain the specific formatting or the other feature that was added by the add-in.

Workaround

To work around this issue, use the Print Preview Full Screen command. To do this, add the command to the Quick Access Toolbar or to a ribbon.

Method 1: Quick Access Toolbar

The Quick Access Toolbar is located on the left side of the Excel title bar. By default, the Quick Access Toolbar contains the following commands:
  • Save
  • Undo
  • Redo
To add the Print Preview Full Screen command to the Quick Access Toolbar, use one of the following methods.
  1. Do one of the following:
    • Click the DOWN ARROW on the Quick Access Toolbar, and then click More Commands.
    • Click the File tab, click Options, and then click Quick Access Toolbar.
  2. In the Choose commands from box, click All Commands.
  3. In the list of commands, click Print Preview Full Screen, and then click Add.
  4. Click OK.

Method 2: Ribbon

To add the Print Preview Full Screen command to a ribbon, follow these steps.

Note In these steps, we add the Print Preview Full Screen command to a new tab.
  1. Do one of the following:
    • Right-click in a blank area of the ribbon, and then click Customize the Ribbon.
    • Click the File tab, click Options, and then click Customize Ribbon.
  2. Click New Tab.
  3. Right-click New Tab (Custom), and then click Rename.
  4. Type Print, and then click OK.
  5. Under Print (Custom), right-click New Group (Custom), and then click Rename.
  6. Type Print Preview, and then click OK.
  7. In the Choose commands from box, click All Commands.
  8. In the list of commands, click Print Preview Full Screen, and then click Add.

    Note Make sure that the custom print preview that you created in step 6 is selected before you click Add.
  9. Click OK.
