You cannot close a console window of an application after you stop debugging the application in Visual Studio on a computer that is running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install security update 978037 on a computer that is running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. This security update is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
    978037 MS10-011: Vulnerability in Windows Client/Server Run-time Subsystem could allow elevation of privilege
  • You debug a console application in Microsoft Visual Studio. The application starts and a console window opens.
  • You stop debugging the application.
In this scenario, the console window cannot be closed from the Close button or from Task Manager. Additionally, you cannot shut down or log off from the computer. You have to press the power button to force the computer to shut down.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
