FIX: IISCertObj methods fail on a computer that is running Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.5

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • On a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, you install and run Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.5.
  • You do either of the following:
    • You use the ExportToBlob method to export the certificate of a Web server instance to an IISCertObj memory buffer.
    • You use the Export method to export a certificate of a Web server instance from a computer that is running Windows Server 2003.
In this scenario, the export fails and one of the the following errors occurs, depending on the method that you use:
  • ExportToBlob method: The method returns a pointer to a single character.
  • Export method: You receive the following error message:
    Error: The stub received bad data.
    Code: 800706F7

This problem occurs because of an error in the IISCertObj component of IIS.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. File information

The English (United States) version of this hotfix package uses a Microsoft Windows Installer package to install the hotfix package. The dates and the times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) in the following table. When you view the file information, the date is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 file information

The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are critical to maintaining the state of the updated component.
