The VPN disconnects in Windows Server 2008 R2 if NAP and the fast reconnect feature are enabled

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install the Network Policy and Access Services server role on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You enable the Network Access Protection (NAP) feature on the computer.
  • You enable the fast reconnect feature on the computer.
  • You connect to the computer from a client by using a virtual private network (VPN) connection together with a smart card.
  • The client sends a reauthentication request to the computer.

Note A reauthentication request is sent when a client is quarantined.
In this scenario, the VPN connection is disconnected.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Extensible Authentication Protocol-Transport Layer Security (EAP-TLS) authentication does not export an attribute when the fast reconnect feature is enabled. This attribute is required by a NAP policy on the Network Policy Server (NPS). Therefore, this behavior causes the connection to fail.
