"Requested IP address" option is missing in the DHCP Discover package that is sent by a client computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • In a network environment, you use a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server to assign IP addresses to client computers.
  • You log on to a client computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. This client computer is assigned an IP address from the DHCP server.
  • You shut down the client computer, or you unplug the network cable from the client computer.
  • After the IP address lease time expires, you restart the client computer, or you plug the network cable to the client computer.
In this scenario, you notice that the previously assigned IP address information is lost on the client computer. Therefore, applications that depend on the IP address may not work correctly.

Note You can use a network monitor tool on the client computer to capture the network traffic. When you do this, you notice that the Requested IP address option is missing in the DHCP Discover (DHCPDISCOVER) package that is sent by the client computer.
