Some unexpected characters may be generated when you use the tcsh shell in Windows Server 2003 R2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install the Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications (SUA) component on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 R2.
  • Hotfix 960657 is installed on the computer.
  • You set the LANG variable to jp_JP.EUC-JP.
  • In a tcsh shell, you run a script that uses the set command to connect two strings that contain Japanese characters.
In this scenario, some unexpected characters may be generated. Additionally, you receive an "illegal byte sequence"�error message when the�tcsh shell processes an echo command that tries to display the string.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

To apply this hotfix, you must be running an x64-based version of Windows Server 2003 R2. Additionally, you must have the SUA component installed.

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

This hotfix replaces the previously released hotfix 960657.
