A portable computer display does not switch back to the internal monitor after you play a DVD on an external monitor and disconnect the HDMI cable in Windows 7

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a portable computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You connect this portable computer to a digital TV by using an HDMI cable.
  • You set the display mode to the Projector only setting.
  • You play a copy-protected DVD in Windows Media Player or in Windows Media Center.
  • You disconnect the HDMI cable.
In this scenario, the monitor does not switch back to the internal display as expected. Instead, the monitor remains blank and you cannot see anything unless you plug the HDMI cable back into the portable computer or you restart the portable computer. This behavior may cause potential data loss.

Note This problem does not occur if you use a DVD that is not copy-protected. This problem seems to be related to copy protection.
